A triangular sail you tension between three fixed points to keep direct sun off a patio. The weave is tight and water repellent, so a shower runs off the fabric instead of soaking through it. Four sizes are available, from a corner over a seating area to a sail across most of a yard.

Why choose a shade sail?

An umbrella is always in the wrong place ten minutes after you move it. A sail is fixed at three points and covers far more ground, with no base standing in the walkway. You decide the angle it hangs at, and that decides where the shade lands.

• Water-repellent weave — rain runs off the surface rather than soaking into the fabric.
• Reinforced D-rings — every corner is double stitched so tension pulls evenly across the sail.
• Three guy lines — 4.5 ft each, with enough slack to hang the sail on a slope.
• Carabiner hooks — clip on and off without tying knots at the anchor points.

Tension the sail between two wall hooks and a post or tree, and set one corner lower than the rest. Water then runs toward that corner instead of pooling in the middle. Take it down when a storm is forecast, because a tightly tensioned sail catches a lot of wind.
