Why polarized rather than just tinted?

A dark lens reduces everything equally, glare included, which is why cheap sunglasses still leave you squinting at a wet road. A polarizing filter removes the reflected light specifically. The effect is most obvious on water, on glass and on tarmac after rain — exactly the situations where it matters.

Polarized lenses can make some LCD screens go dark at certain angles, including car dashboards and phones — normal, and worth knowing in advance. Clean them with a microfibre cloth; a mirrored coating marks more easily than the lens beneath it. If you keep them in a car door pocket, take the case option.
