A lens on its own only works as well as the light in the room, and most rooms are darker than you think after sunset. Built-in LEDs put the light exactly where the lens is pointed. Three modes let you drop the brightness when glossy paper starts reflecting back at you.

Hold the lens roughly a hand's width from the page and move it slowly until the text snaps into focus. Use the lowest brightness that works, because too much light on glossy paper washes the detail out. Clean the lens with a dry glasses cloth and nothing abrasive.
