Why choose a flush glass fitting?

The default hallway light in most homes is a plastic disc that nobody chose. Swapping it is the cheapest visible upgrade in the house, and smoked glass does something a plastic diffuser cannot: it softens the light while still showing the shape of the fitting rather than glowing as a flat white circle.

Integrated LEDs are not replaceable, which is the trade-off for the flatter profile — when the LED reaches the end of its life the fitting is replaced rather than the bulb.
