Grass Seed Mat – The seed stays where you put it

Grass seed held in a biodegradable backing, supplied as two rolls of roughly 300 by 20 cm. Roll it out over prepared soil, trim it to the shape of the patch, and water. The backing breaks down into the ground as the grass comes through.

Why use a seed mat rather than loose seed?

Scattered seed goes two places: into the low spots when you water it, and into the birds. A mat holds the seed at an even spacing and keeps it there through both, which is why patched areas from a mat come through evenly instead of in clumps with bald gaps between them.

Rake the patch loose and level before laying the mat, and press it down into contact with the soil — seed sitting on a hard crust does not germinate no matter how much you water it. Keep it consistently damp until the grass is established; letting it dry out once at the wrong moment is what kills most patch repairs. Stay off the area until the new grass has been cut twice.
